What was Rihanna & T-Pain Wearing?

What in the world was Rihanna and T-Pain thinking when they wore those outfits at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards last night September 7, 2008 in Hollywood, California? I thought that T-Pain looked like a character from The Beatles: Yellow Submarine. And don’t get me started with Rihanna.
Did I just see this right? Did T-Pain show up riding atop of an elephant? See a image of T-Pain at the MTV Video Music Awards.
