Hip-Hop To Blame For Teenage Promiscuity?

by Jyle on November 26th, 2007

angellola3 A study suggest that the hip-hop music culture is to blame for the surge of teenage promiscuity. The study surveyed young African-American women and they found that there was a significant correlation between those who regularly watched hip-hop music video’s, marijuana use and number of sexual partners.

I don’t disagree that there are problems in hip-hop culture. What I do have a problem with is the signalling out of rap music over much more destructive music genres. Plus, hip-hop isn’t all that defined if you think about it. On the one hand you have rappers like 50 cent who regularly have scantly dressed women dancing in the background, and on the other there are strong women like Missy Eliot who are the opposite of brainless hookers.

I am of the opinion that music does not influence negative behavior. Society will continue to look for other influences to blame for teenage promiscuity, sex, drugs and violence instead of addressing the underlying issues behind WHY teenagers engage in risky behavior.

Furthermore, where are these children’s parents? I know I wasn’t allowed to leave the house dressed in next to nothing when I was growing up.

Instead of blaming the media, perhaps we should ask what these kids parents are doing when their teen is engaging in promiscuous behavior.

I agree with you Jyle and Denise. It’s shameful that people blame this craziness on music. Society just wants to find an easy way out by blaming these acts on Hip Hop.
