I’ve been waiting to post this one… It is easily my favorite Outkast joint, and probably my favorite Christmas song. Player’s Ball dropped in 1993 as their first single, but before that it appeared on a compilation called A LaFace Christmas. The record had songs from different LaFace recording artists which included TLC, Toni Braxton and Usher. In Player’s Ball, the beat is carried by sleigh bells while Andre and Big Boi drop their southern playalistic lyrics filled with Christmas references.

This has got to be the most gangster christmas video ever made. Snoop in the flying lo lo with Nate Dogg and Tray Deee singing Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto off my all time favorite holiday album, Christmas on Death Row (1996). My wish-list probably included a Nintendo 64, a copy of Muddy Waters and some seriously puffy skate shoes that year. What was on yours?

Over 12 years have passed by since the Pharcyde dropped their debut and classic album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. Unfortunately, after their sophomore effort things began to fall apart. Not even the J-Dilla production or Spike Jonze direction could keep them together. I’ve got respect for early 80’s hip hop but if I never heard The Message again I wouldn’t be bummed. I was born in 1983, maybe that’s the problem: a 15 year disconnect from the birth of rap.
