You Down Wit OPP?
February 3, 2010 by stephaniehoff
Beef is a pretty common thing in hip-hop, amongst the biggest are Biggie and 2Pac, MC Shan and KRS, Roxanne Shante and the Real Roxanne. Tonight I was reminded of a pretty down low beef that included Naughty By Nature and a lesser known Jersey cat named Tony D. When Naughty’s debut single OPP dropped in 1991, they blew up pretty fast, that jam was playing everywhere. It Probably took one day for Tony D to hear and and start laughing. See the thing is, Tony made the exact same beat two years prior called Adam’s Nightmare on Sure Shot …read more
Sadat X: True Wine Connoisseur
January 28, 2010 by stephaniehoff
Hey what’s Brand Nubian been up to lately? It’s been a minute since their classic One For All album dropped. Puba went solo after that, I’m kind of glad he did. Lord Jamar did something, Sadat did Wild Cowboys, I know all this. I mean recently where have they been… Well I know what Sadat X is doing! Drinking lots of wine and sounding like ODB! Sadat’s True Wine Connoisseur is a Youtube series, where he rates wines that are under twenty dollars. In this episode, our favorite Five Percenter rapper opens up a bottle of Castle Rock ($12.99) and …read more
2009: Year of the Collaboration
December 13, 2009 by stephaniehoff
As I look back on 2009 and think about all the albums that dropped, I realized something unusual. Not only did a lot of my favorite rappers from the 90’s put out records, but they did it by teaming up with one another. Oh you slept on them? Wake up and check these:
Buckshot & KRS-One: Survival Skills
Del & Tame One: Parallel Uni-Verses
Masta Ace & Ed OG: Arts & Entertainment
OC & AG: Oasis
Yes I’ll admit, some are better than others. Del and Tame One of Artifacts had the strongest effort, but I’d be lying if I said i wasn’t tripping every …read more
Lancecape on The Undergods EP
November 26, 2009 by stephaniehoff
A couple of months ago Keith Murray and Canibus put out The Undergods self-titled debut EP. I’m a really big fan of Keith Murray so I was stoked for new material and had the iTunes pumping it for about a week. Around this time, my friend and I are chilling at the crib when the second last track (Rise of the Machine) comes on and I’m like, “are you hearing this dirty beat?!” We’re feeling it for a couple seconds when my friend announces that he’s old high school crew with the dude that produced it. Obviously I had to …read more
Mos Def Bets a Million Dollars On MF DOOM Against ‘Lil Wayne
Last March The Culture Capture Champs caught up with Mos Def in the studio to find out about his influences. The video that resulted is insanely entertaining especially if you’re a fan of MF DOOM. For 7 minutes Mos recites some of the best MF lyrics revealing just how tight they are.
Regardless there’s no doubt that MF DOOM is one of Mos Def’s top rappers and biggest influences. He knows his ish inside out. He talks about when Madvillainy came out that he looked at the record and just KNEW that they got it right not to mention he didn’t …read more
Madvillain is Villanous in ‘All Caps’ Video
There’s two things I love most about Madvillain, MF DOOM and Madlib. A force to be reckoned with this duo has been turning up on my playlist time and time again since 2004, the date they released Madvillainy. This gem of a record has some of the best samples and lyrics that you’ll actually stop to listen to. Madlib’s beats hook you in while MF’s lyricism is highly hypnotic. Some call MF’s style lazy but I think he kills it. No matter how slow and burnt out he sounds his rhymes always drop on point.
What I love even more is …read more
Roccett – “I’m Getting Money/Bang Dat”
August 24, 2009 by Jyle
Everyone seems to be a rapper these days. Some looking for a free ride, other to showcase their talent and get their music out there. Underground music is a great place to find these talented young artists. Take the new Roccett for example, born and raised in Carson, California he knows how to hustle for money.
In his music he portrays that lifestyle in pure form. True hip hop if you ask me. Listen to his music video below and let me know what you think of it. Will this guy make it or is he going to have to …read more

Ali Vegas "That’s Nothing" – Audio
June 25, 2008 by Jyle
I like the beat to this song “That’s Nothing” by Ali Vegas. It’s a bit different from what you usually hear from hip hop artists. Ali is from South Jamaica, Queens, New York and is signed with NBA player, Lamar Odom’s record label, Rich Soil, due to the fact that he and Lamar are close friends. You can listen to the track below and let me know what y’all think!
You can see Ali’s official MySpace page by clicking here!
